About

A research firm that happens to do M&A.

Hearthline was built on the belief that in a market nobody measures properly, the firm that measures it best has an advantage that compounds.

Why propane

It is one of the most fragmented industries in America and one of the least documented. Somewhere between two and four thousand independent retailers — nobody knows the real number, and the figure most often quoted turns out to be an association's membership count across twelve countries. More than half the market is held by companies too small to appear on any national ranking. The three national operators have stopped acquiring, and private-equity-backed platforms have taken their place.

It is also an industry where the specialist advisors all work for sellers. Every one of them. That struck us as an odd gap, and it is the one Hearthline fills.

How we work

Who runs it

Kyle Martin founded Hearthline Advisors. He is not a former investment banker, and the firm is not built on a borrowed track record from somewhere else. His background is in building companies, in research, and in reaching people who are hard to reach — which is, in practice, most of what this work actually is.

Hearthline is based in Orange County, California and works nationally.

Where we are honest about being new

The firm is new. We say so rather than dressing up someone else's deal history as our own, which is common practice in this corner of the industry. What we bring instead is the most complete public picture of propane consolidation that exists, and the willingness to be measured on the quality of it.
